American Chestnut Description The American Chestnut wood used in the construction of our KICKING BIRD AMERICAN CHESTNUT BOX CALL is more than just wood, it "IS" a piece of Pennsylvania history, rich in both beauty and nostalgia. Over 150 years ago, when Pennsylvania was still young and untouched of modern development, a farm was settled along the banks of the Susquehanna River in Central Pennsylvania. The wood for our chestnut box comes from beams of an out - building that contained an icehouse and summer kitchen. At that time, this area of Pennsylvania was rich with the American Chestnut trees. However around the turn of the century, an introduced blight decimated the vital and important tree. Today, American Chestnut trees are extremely rare in Pennsylvania .... This wood is some of the most sought after wood in the world. Our fine craftsmen hand tune each box call to perfection, to produce some of the richest, deepest turkey call sounds made today.... The American Chestnut box reproduces the most realistic calls of the wild turkey. The wood with its hard and soft spot texture is extremely effective to produce soft purrs and clucks, but will stand out in a crowd when it comes to making a high pitch call that will get the notice of that sultan of the hardwoods. It has a very raspy cluck and the cutts are superb.
